Penis size is a hot topic in male sexuality. Men’s insecurity about their penis size has led to the popular myth that size matters. However, the showpiece and grower phenomenon has shown that penis size is not straightforward. A popular belief is that the larger a penis is when flaccid, the larger it will be when erect. In other words, showers supposedly have smaller penises during an erection, while growers have significant length gain during an erection. Is there any truth to this showing and growing phenomenon? As a urologist, I will shed light on the subject and explain the science behind it.
The Showers vs Growers Phenomenon: What is it?
The concept of showers/growers concerns the difference in penis length during an erection. Essentially, show-ers have a penis that is more or less the same length regardless of whether it is flaccid or erect, while grow-ers’ penises dramatically increase in length when they become erect.
To put this in perspective, scientists have defined the phenomenon over several decades. A study conducted by Wessels and Lue on 80 men found that 79% were growers. A later study conducted by Chung et al. found that among 274 men, 26% were growers. The study concluded that genetic variation plays a significant role in penis length, elasticity, and, as seen earlier, the difference between showers and growers.

Factors contributing to this phenomenon:
Genetics play a crucial role in determining whether one will be a shower or a grower. Genetics impact penis size directly, and while the penis is in its development stage, certain physical changes occur. Hence, while your earlier years impact whether you are a shower or grower, it is something you will have for the rest of your life. Interestingly, a large study showed that older men (>65 years old) tend to be growers too.

Collagen and Tissue Make-up:
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and it is critical for tissue density and strength, elasticity and shape maintenance. It is the primary structural protein in the connective tissue handling penis rigidity. In essence, the more collagen in one’s penis, the more elastic and rigid it is, and hence, the more dramatic the size increase one experiences upon erection.

Lifestyle:
A lifestyle pattern that leads to penile rigidity issues is a key driver to whether you are a shower or a grower. For instance, smoking or being overweight are factors that lead to the penis not responding well to stimuli as the collagen elasticity won’t be as much as it should. Once the penis loses its flexibility and resistance, it becomes less elastic, which, over time, leads to a decline in its rigidity and girth upon erection.
Environmental Factors:
As stated earlier, showers and growers have nothing to do with one’s sexual satisfaction. In particular, environmental factors, like temperature, are known to affect the penis’s length. Cold water, low temperature, and large changes in temperature, such as a sudden reduction in water temperature, could lead to the penis “shrinking.” The opposite occurs when there is warmth and a feeling of comfort. This means if a grower is in a cold environment, they will experience more shrinkage, while showers won’t experience any significant changes.
Final Thoughts:
When it comes to the Shower vs. Grower phenomenon, there is no good or bad side; there is only the side you fall under. The penis’ rigidity and elasticity vary on numerous issues, including lifestyle choices, environmental factors, genetics, and age. Given that the penis has many factors that can cause it to fluctuate, it is best to feel comfortable with whatever size you carry around. In conclusion, the important thing is to focus on the pleasure of intercourse, rather than externalities affecting one’s enjoyment and happiness. Penises are unique, even among show-ers or growers, and either way, they are normal.
