Empirical Findings

In a nursing home study, 77% of included participants used pads for urinary incontinence and  On average, absorbent pads were changed 2.3 times a day in women (range 0.5–8.0) and 3.1 times a day in men (range 1.0–9.0) (P = 0.09). 

Differences between Menstrual Pad and Incontinence Disposable Pad

• Many women use menstrual pads to manage their urinary incontinence. 

• It is important to understand that they are not menopausal or are just on the other side of menopause they may have menstrual pads around the house.

• Many women feel embarrassed to buy incontinence pads because it makes them think of “diapers” and that is what “old women” need. And there is nothing worse in our patriarchal society than being an “old woman.”

• Of more than 1,000 women between the ages of 50 and 80 who answered the poll, 43 percent of women in their 50s and early 60s said they had experienced urinary incontinence, as had 51 percent of those aged 65 and over and many younger women do as well. 

• Incontinence disposable pads can absorb fluid more quickly, making them a great solution for bladder leakage. • About one in every four women with incontinence said they used sanitary napkins to absorb leaked urine, the NAFC found. 

• Sanitary napkins are made to absorb menstrual blood, however, and do not provide the same level of protection as incontinence pads. 

• Another 17 percent of women with incontinence reported using tissues, paper towels, or toilet paper rather than specifically designed incontinence pads.

• Larger and thicker incontinence pads will absorb more urine, but will be bulkier and harder to put on and remove. In general, pads will prove more helpful to people with light or moderate urine leakage.

What to consider when purchasing disposable pads 

• The amount or degree of incontinence is an important factor when choosing the right incontinence product. 

• For light incontinence, a pad is usually sufficient, whereas for moderate to heavy incontinence, a slip or pants is more appropriate.

• In addition, it is important to consider the absorption level of a product. Absorbency is the amount of urine the incontinence product is able to absorb and retain without leaking.

Finding the right size incontinence product is of great importance

• Although it is important to note that the absorbency level of a product has nothing to do with the size of the incontinence product. 

• It may sound counterintuitive, but a product that is too large actually increases the risk of leakage, while a product that is too small or ill-fitting will feel uncomfortable.

• The best fit can be determined by measuring the hip circumference, which is measured by stretching a measuring tape around the widest part of the hips, about 10 centimeters below the navel.

What causes urine to smell bad?

• Normal urine does not necessarily have a foul smell. Many people with bladder control problems limit the amount of fluids they drink in hopes of reducing troublesome leakage. However, this causes the urine to become highly concentrated. It will appear dark yellow and have a bad odor. 

• You can prevent your urine from having an unpleasant odor by staying hydrated and drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. Diluted, uninfected urine does not have a strong or unpleasant odor. 

• However, sometimes other things cause your pee to smell. A bladder infection can cause foul-smelling urine. If a strong or foul-smelling odor exists, contact your urologist for diagnosis and treatment of a possible urinary tract infection. If an infection goes untreated, it can sometimes damage the kidneys.

• There are other causes of odor in the urine too. Certain foods or beverages you consume can affect urine smell. This depends on each person’s body chemistry but, for example, everyone seems to identify asparagus and coffee as producing a stronger, more distinct odor in their urine.

• Some medications may also change the way your urine smells or looks, so be sure to talk to your pharmacist if you are taking a new medicine and note a difference in the way your urine looks or smells.
