Empirical Findings
In a nursing home study, 77% of included participants used pads for urinary incontinence and On average, absorbent pads were changed 2.3 times a day in women (range 0.5–8.0) and 3.1 times a day in men (range 1.0–9.0) (P = 0.09).
Differences between Menstrual Pad and Incontinence Disposable Pad
- Many women use menstrual pads to manage their urinary incontinence.
- It is important to understand that they are not menopausal or are just on the other side of menopause they may have menstrual pads around the house.
- Many women feel embarrassed to buy incontinence pads because it makes them think of “diapers” and that is what “old women” need. And there is nothing worse in our patriarchal society than being an “old woman.”
- Of more than 1,000 women between the ages of 50 and 80 who answered the poll, 43 percent of women in their 50s and early 60s said they had experienced urinary incontinence, as had 51 percent of those aged 65 and over and many younger women do as well.
- Incontinence disposable pads can absorb fluid more quickly, making them a great solution for bladder leakage. Menstrual pads are designed to hold menstrual flow whereas incontinence pads are designed to absorb the rapid flow of urine. Additionally, incontinence pads are designed to absorb and hold much more fluid than menstrual pads, which means you will have fewer leaks.
Discuss who needs pads
Incontinence disposable pads and other products and devices can make life easier for you if you’re waiting for a diagnosis or for a treatment to work.
A wide range of products and devices are available for urinary incontinence.
They include:
- pads and pants
- bed and chair protection
- catheters and penile sheaths
- skincare and hygiene products
- specially adapted clothing and swimwear
Our video focuses on disposable pads.
- The most popular incontinence products are absorbent disposable pads that are worn inside underwear to soak up urine.
- Pads and pull-up pants use the same technology as babies’ nappies and have a “hydrophobic” layer which draws urine away from the surface of the product, so your skin stays dry.
- If you have mild to moderate incontinence you can buy thin, discreet pads or pull-up pants for men and women from many supermarkets and pharmacies.
- For people with severe leaks, continence clinics and urologists are best to talk to.
- Adult diapers and heavier forms of incontinence pads are available for people with moderate to heavy urine leakage. They are usually worn in place of underwear, and they are designed to fit snugly. Most include leg gathers to prevent urine leakage. They are available in both disposable and reusable forms.
- Incontinence pads are designed specifically to absorb urine leakage and protect the skin from wetness and rash.
- A survey by the National Association for Continence (NAFC) found that three of every five of its consumer members used some type of incontinence pad or adult diaper.
- Unfortunately, the study revealed that many were using products not specifically made for the task.
- About one in every four women with incontinence said they used sanitary napkins to absorb leaked urine, the NAFC found.
- Sanitary napkins are made to absorb menstrual blood, however, and do not provide the same level of protection as incontinence pads.
- Another 17 percent of women with incontinence reported using tissues, paper towels, or toilet paper rather than specifically designed incontinence pads.
- Larger and thicker incontinence pads will absorb more urine, but will be bulkier and harder to put on and remove. In general, pads will prove more helpful to people with light or moderate urine leakage.
What to consider when purchasing disposable pads
- The amount or degree of incontinence is an important factor when choosing the right incontinence product.
- For light incontinence, a pad is usually sufficient, whereas for moderate to heavy incontinence, a slip or pants is more appropriate.
- In addition, it is important to consider the absorption level of a product. Absorbency is the amount of urine the incontinence product is able to absorb and retain without leaking.
Finding the right size incontinence product is of great importance
- Although it is important to note that the absorbency level of a product has nothing to do with the size of the incontinence product.
- It may sound counterintuitive, but a product that is too large actually increases the risk of leakage, while a product that is too small or ill-fitting will feel uncomfortable.
- The best fit can be determined by measuring the hip circumference, which is measured by stretching a measuring tape around the widest part of the hips, about 10 centimeters below the navel.
What causes urine to smell bad?
- Normal urine does not necessarily have a foul smell. Many people with bladder control problems limit the amount of fluids they drink in hopes of reducing troublesome leakage. However, this causes the urine to become highly concentrated. It will appear dark yellow and have a bad odor.
- You can prevent your urine from having an unpleasant odor by staying hydrated and drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. Diluted, uninfected urine does not have a strong or unpleasant odor.
- However, sometimes other things cause your pee to smell. A bladder infection can cause foul-smelling urine. If a strong or foul-smelling odor exists, contact your urologist for diagnosis and treatment of a possible urinary tract infection. If an infection goes untreated, it can sometimes damage the kidneys.
- There are other causes of odor in the urine too. Certain foods or beverages you consume can affect urine smell. This depends on each person’s body chemistry but, for example, everyone seems to identify asparagus and coffee as producing a stronger, more distinct odor in their urine.
- Some medications may also change the way your urine smells or looks, so be sure to talk to your pharmacist if you are taking a new medicine and note a difference in the way your urine looks or smells.

6. Maximum absorbency
- Because Boosters are designed to be used in combination with our protective underwear to increase absorbency.
- These contoured boosters are topped with a soft cotton-like material and quickly wick moisture away and keep it locked in.
- Unlike pads, boosters do not have a plastic backing so that liquid can flow through into the underwear below when the booster is full.
- Many of our customers talk about how they place a pad in their underwear to increase absorbency, but a booster is a better choice as it is designed to work with the underwear to increase total absorbency.
- Boosters can be replaced when they are full but haven’t soaked through to the underwear. This can reduce costs as a replacement booster is less expensive than a new pair of underwear.
- A booster is a great choice to increase absorbency when traveling with limited bathroom breaks, or overnight when overnight underwear cannot contain all the liquid. Our Maximum boosters hold more than 6 cups of liquid.
- Use inside disposable incontinence underwear. Booster will absorb liquid until saturated, then excess liquid will flow through to the underwear underneath.
- Dispose when saturated. If underwear is also saturated, replace underwear. If underwear is not saturated, replace only the booster.
- Some incontinence-related skin care products (e.g., protective rash cream, no-rinse cleansing spray).

- In addition to being produced in an eco-friendly facility, the packaging for the Premium Plus line will use I’m green™ Polyethylene to create plastic produced from sugarcane.
- I’m green Polyethylene retains the same properties, performance, and application versatility of polyethylene typically made from fossil fuel – but uses a raw renewable sugarcane instead.
