Getting kicked in the testicles is very painful and some people compare it to the pain associated with childbirth.

Why do you feel pain in your belly when you get kicked in the testicles?

Getting kicked in the testicles is really uncomfortable. When you are undergoing development the testicles are located in the upper part of the abdomen near your kidneys. They descend or go down into the scrotum but you still have nervous connections that go all the way up to the abdomen. So that’s why you can have this referred pain when you get an injury to the testicle and it feels uncomfortable in the abdomen.

What other symptoms can you have and why?

Testicular trauma can cause a number of symptoms other than pain some of which include:

  • Light headedness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

So, why do you feel these symptoms? When you have certain triggers, such as stress, pain, or prolonged standing, this causes your parasympathetic nervous system to fire and it causes your heart rate and your blood pressure to drop. This then results in these types of symptoms.

What to do when you get kicked in the testicles?

Most of the time when you have a testicular injury the pain after that will go away within 15 minutes to an hour. The following may help you recover:

  • Lay down and rest
  • Put an ice pack on the area
  • Elevate the area with a rolled-up towel underneath the crotch

Is there a risk of serious damage?

If the pain doesn’t subside in 15 to 60 minutes, you should strongly consider going to the emergency room. There are some serious sequelae that can happen from a traumatic injury to the scrotum.

  1. If the blow was hard enough you can rupture the testicles. So you see the scrotum get swollen and continue to swell. You may also notice that your scrotum looks black and blue and you have continued pain.
  1. The other thing that could happen, which is very rare in this circumstance is testicular torsion. The testicle could twist on itself and that is a surgical emergency because we need to untwist the testicle before you lose blood flow to the testicles.
