Hematuria (Blood in Urine)

Hematuria is the presence of red blood cells in the urine. It can be a sign of a problem with the urinary system, such as the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra.

Two Types of Hematuria

Microscopic Hematuria

Microscopic hematuria is when there are red blood cells in the urine, but they are not visible to the naked eye. This type of hematuria is usually detected during a routine urine test.

Gross Hematuria

Gross hematuria is when the urine is visibly red or pink, which may be caused by a larger amount of blood in the urine.

Hematuria can be caused by a variety of conditions, including urinary tract infections, kidney stones, enlarged prostate, and certain medications. In some cases, hematuria may be a sign of a more serious condition, such as kidney disease, bladder cancer, or prostate cancer. It’s important to see a healthcare provider if you have hematuria to determine the cause and get proper treatment.
