What is masochism? Is it psychopathology or just a preference? Why do people prefer pain with sexual intercourse? How common is it?
What is masochism?
Masochism is a term defined as the enjoyment of sexual experiences with some combination of pain, loss of control, and humiliation.
It’s actually quite common. As early as 1500 you can find some written and video documentation of masochism.
Why do people enjoy masochism?
There’s a lot of theories as to why people enjoy masochism. One popular theory suggests that it is used as a release from one sense of self. For example, it allows a person to “get away from it all” and just focus on the sexual pleasure they’re having in front of them. A method to eliminate distractions.
Is masochism psychopathology or just a preference?
People who do enjoy this sort of pain with sex actually have no other psychopathology, this is not considered a mental illness. They don’t have other signs or symptoms of instability. They are just normal people who have a certain preference for masochism.
What is BDSM?
BDSM is a term used to describe certain aspects of sex that can be split into these major groups: Bondage and Discipline, Domination and Sadism & Masochism.
Some examples of theses include:
- Dominance: using blindfolding, or requiring your partner to follow rules
- Submission: requiring kneeling and subservience, using titles such as sir or mister
- Visual play: watching your partner being tied up
- Attributes: use of sexual toys to augment intercourse
Very often people have at least tried this once or twice in their lives. Many people incorporate BDSM techniques into practice and enjoy it.
How many people practice BDSM?
A published study surveyed thousand Belgian people and looked at their interest in BDSM or bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, sadism and masochism and what they found was that 47% of people had tried one form of BDSM at some point during their lives and 22% of people were interested in it.
I think this is totally normal and we should take away the stigma behind it. People are allowed to have intercourse as long as they’re not causing harm to themselves or others in whatever way they prefer. People who engage in masochism don’t actually have any desire to cause self-harm or harm to their partner so they actually practice very safely.
